From 1933-1945, the central institutions of the National Socialist persecution and extermination machine had their headquarters at the site of today’s “Topography of Terror” on the Wilhelmstraße and the former Prinz-Albrecht-Straße (today: Niederkirchnerstraße); including the Gestapo, the SS and the Reich Security Head Office from 1939 on.
Since 1987, the documentation “Topography of Terror” has provided information about the historical site and has uncovered the European dimensions of the National Socialist reign of terror. As of May 2010, the completely re-worked permanent exhibition can be seen in German and English in the new exhibition space. The space also includes a reference library (about 27,000 volumes), a seminar centre and an auditorium. The entire site, along with the physical traces from the time period, has been made accessible and redesigned.
The Topography of Terror Foundation focuses on the presentation of exhibitions, the holding of public talks and discussion events as well as conferences and seminars. The foundation administers numerous coordination and advisory activities within the field of memorial site work and the culture of remembrance, on both a national and international level. They have been in charge of the National Socialist Forced Labour Documentation Centre in Berlin-Schöneweide since 2005.
